One of my absolute FAVORITE seasons is fall, a time when the leaves show off their beautiful colors, and the air becomes crisp and refreshing. The transition from the sweltering heat of summer to the cooler, more comfortable temperatures of autumn is something I eagerly anticipate each year. One of my favorite smells that perfectly encapsulates the this enchanting season is undoubtedly pumpkin spice. The warm, aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove blended with the sweet scent of pumpkin is simply irresistible.

Once these things happen, I feel an overwhelming urge to pull out the UGG boots and don that flannel shirt, and you better believe I'm lighting that Cinnabun candle, because I am all in for the season. Unfortunately, the weather here in Alabama often defies my seasonal enthusiasm, remaining as hot as the surface of the sun even in October. The sweltering heat can be disheartening, especially when all I want is to enjoy the cool, crisp air of fall. :( However, regardless of how warm the weather is here, this delectable bread recipe is sure to transport you into the heart of the fall mood, evoking all the cozy feelings that come with this beautiful season.

This dessert comes together rather quickly, making it an ideal choice for busy bakers or those who simply want to enjoy a homemade treat without spending hours in the kitchen. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity, as it can be made in just one bowl. This not only minimizes the cleanup process but also allows for a more enjoyable baking experience, as you can focus on the joy of creating rather than the hassle of washing multiple dishes.

The streusel topping, a crunchy and sweet addition that elevates the bread to new heights, can be easily doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled. This means you can prepare a generous batch and leave it chilling in the refrigerator until you're ready to top something else with its glorious, crunchy goodness. Imagine this delectable streusel on top of pumpkin muffins or even a glorious topping to an apple pie! The possibilities are endless, and perhaps that will inspire my next recipe adventure.

So, as the leaves begin to change and the days grow shorter, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of fall in your kitchen.

Happy Baking!

Pantry Items

  • Unsalted Butter

  • All-Purpose Flour

  • Brown Sugar - the recipe calls for light brown sugar, but you know me...I use dark brown sugar whenever I can!

  • Granulated Sugar

  • Pumpkin Pie Spice

  • Pumpkin Puree - 100% pure canned pumpkin is NOT the same as canned pumpkin pie filling. Canned pumpkin pie filling contains sugars, spices, and sometimes thickeners.

  • Oil - any neutral oil will be fine. I used coconut but veggie, canola, avocado oil will work.

  • Eggs - large eggs

  • Vanilla Extract

  • Baking Soda

  • Cinnamon

  • Kosher Salt

How to make it

Streusel Instructions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate while you prepare the pumpkin bread.

Pumpkin Bread Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease a 9x5 loaf pan or line it with parchment paper, ensuring the paper extends over the long sides for easy removal.

  2. In a medium bowl, mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, salt) and set aside.

  3. In another medium bowl, whisk the wet ingredients (pumpkin puree, sugars, oil, eggs, milk, and vanilla) until well combined.

  4. Incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture and whisk until smooth.

  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.

  6. Take the streusel out of the fridge and use a fork or your fingers to break it into uniform clumps. Cover the batter completely with the streusel.

  7. Bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. If needed, bake for an additional 5 minutes and recheck. Let cool for 15 minutes before glazing.

Maple Glaze Instructions

  1. While baking, mix the powdered sugar and maple syrup.

  2. After cooling the bread for 15 minutes, either remove it from the pan to cool on a wire rack or apply the glaze directly.

  3. Allow the pumpkin bread to set for another 30 minutes before slicing.

Pumpkin Spice Instructions

  1. Mix all the spices together and store in an airtight container. To save time, you can double or triple the recipe if used frequently. It stays fresh for about a year in a cool, dry place.

Notes

  1. Pumpkin Puree: 100% pure canned pumpkin is NOT the same as canned pumpkin pie filling. Canned pumpkin pie filling contains sugars, spices, and sometimes thickeners.
